Pros & Cons
Pros
- f/1.4 aperture: Excellent performance in low light conditions and very artistic background blur (bokeh).
- Lightweight and compact: At only 415g, it is extremely portable for a lens of this brightness.
- Silent Focus (STM): Fast, nearly inaudible stepping motor, ideal for video and discreet photography.
- Short Focus Distance: Get up to 27cm (10in) closer to your subject to capture details with a shallow depth of field.
- Weather Sealed: Dust and drip resistant, allowing use in variable outdoor conditions.
- Value for money: It offers f/1.4 aesthetics at a much more affordable price than the S line models.
Cons
- No S-Line seal: Lacks the premium optical coatings (such as Nano Crystal Coat) present in the professional range.
- Edge sharpness: At maximum aperture (f/1.4), corners may be less sharp than the f/1.8 S model.
- Minimal physical controls: No dedicated focus mode (A/M) switch on the lens barrel.
- Chromatic aberrations: In high contrast situations at f/1.4, there may be slight color fringing compared to more expensive lenses.
