The Kodak Kodak Disc 4000 is a compact fixed-focus film camera introduced in 1982 for Kodak’s new Disc film system. Its flat, pocketable body accepts sealed 15-exposure cartridges; exposure and film advance are automated, and an electronic flash is built into the camera. The fixed 12.5mm f/2.8 lens was designed around the tiny 8 × 10.5mm frame and represents some of the most distinctive engineering in the Disc family.
Its photographic value lies in the way industrial design, miniaturization, and film chemistry were brought together. Kodak tried to compensate for the very small negative with a four-element optical design, a molded-glass aspheric surface, and a high-resolution emulsion. The result records both the technical ambition of the early 1980s and the physical limits of enlarging such a small frame: the camera is an important engineering artifact, even though its prints could look grainier and softer than 35mm photographs.
The Kodak Disc 4000 suits collectors, studies of short-lived photographic formats, and experimental projects using Disc film. It can also help photographers explore the look of subminiature negatives and the history of automated consumer cameras. Because Disc film is discontinued, present-day use depends on finding preserved cartridges and a laboratory equipped to process and print the circular film correctly.
