Summary

The Leica Summicron-M 66 f/2 from Leica is a manual-focus M-mount prime built around an unusual 66mm focal length and a fast f/2 maximum aperture. Leica presents it as a modern reinterpretation of the Elcan 66mm f/2, a lens originally developed for a classified US Navy contract and produced in a very small historical run. This new version belongs to the Leica Classic Line and is shaped as much by archival significance as by everyday photographic utility.

The 66mm angle of view sits between a classic normal lens and a short portrait lens, giving images a natural perspective with a little more compression than 50mm. Wide open, the Leica Summicron-M 66 f/2 is positioned for subject separation and soft bokeh; stopped down, Leica emphasizes resolution and fine detail. It also preserves historical details such as the reverse-turning aperture ring, a military-inspired distance scale and engravings tied to the original optical concept.

Its main appeal is history, rarity and mechanical character. Production is limited to 660 units worldwide, each individually numbered, so this is a lens for Leica M users, collectors and photographers who want a distinctive manual-focus focal length rather than a broadly practical tool. It is not accessible in price or availability, but it is a singular option for environmental portraiture, slower reportage, street work and documentary photography with a very specific signature.
