The 24-120mm range moves naturally from landscape, architecture and street framing to portrait and short-telephoto compression without stopping to change lenses, while the constant f/4 aperture keeps exposure behavior consistent through the full zoom travel. Nikon places it in the S-Line for controlled aberrations, strong contrast and dependable edge-to-edge detail, qualities that matter when scenes change quickly and working distance is never fixed. At about 630 g, with a 77 mm filter thread and roughly 84 x 118 mm dimensions, it balances portability and confidence for long shooting days. Nikon announced this model on October 28, 2021, and commercial availability followed on January 28, 2022.

The optical formula uses 16 elements in 13 groups, including 3 ED elements, one aspherical ED element and three additional aspherical elements to suppress both axial and lateral chromatic aberration. Nano Crystal Coat and ARNEO Coat help reduce flare and ghosting under hard backlight, and the fluorine-coated front element improves cleaning speed in regular field use. A 0.35 m minimum focus distance across the zoom range plus a 0.39x maximum reproduction ratio makes the lens useful for detail work, product framing and environmental close-ups without moving to a dedicated macro lens. Dual STM-based multi-focusing supports quiet, responsive AF for stills and video, and the barrel includes a customizable control ring plus a programmable Fn button for direct access to ISO, exposure compensation and other frequent settings.
