Summary

The NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II is Nikon's second-generation professional telephoto zoom, significantly redesigned to prioritize mobility without compromising S-Line optical excellence. By achieving a remarkable 26% weight reduction, it weighs just 998g (without tripod foot), making it one of the lightest f/2.8 telephoto zooms in its class. This version maintains a constant f/2.8 aperture and an internal zoom mechanism, ensuring a balanced handling experience for demanding sports, wildlife, and portrait photography.

Technical advancements include the implementation of the Silky Swift VCM (SSVCM) motor, which provides roughly 40% faster autofocus response and near-silent operation ideal for hybrid workflows. The optical formula of 18 elements in 16 groups utilizes Meso Amorphous and ARNEO coatings to virtually eliminate ghosting and flare. It also features a class-leading minimum focus distance of just 0.38m at the wide end, allowing for impressive close-up performance with a 0.3x maximum magnification.

Designed for professional reliability, the lens features a comprehensive dust- and splash-resistant build and a 77mm filter thread. The body includes four L-Fn2 buttons, a dedicated AF/MF switch, a customizable control ring, and a de-click switch for the iris. The removable tripod collar is now natively Arca-Swiss compatible, reflecting a modern understanding of professional rigging needs. With up to 6 stops of Synchro VR stabilization, it is a definitive tool for Z-mount photographers seeking ultimate performance in a portable package.
