Summary

The Viltrox AF 9mm f/2.8 Air is an APS-C ultra-wide prime designed for compact mirrorless systems. In Fujifilm X-mount it delivers a 113.8° angle of view and an approximately 13.5mm full-frame equivalent perspective, making it a natural fit for landscapes, architecture, tight interiors, travel and immersive vlogging. Its appeal is very much in line with the Air series: a tiny body, just 175g of weight, a practical 58mm filter thread and a $199 official price, while still offering autofocus and a surprisingly serious optical formula.

The official specification is concrete: 13 elements in 11 groups, including 2 aspherical, 3 ED and 3 HR elements, a 7-blade diaphragm, f/2.8 maximum aperture, f/16 minimum aperture, 0.13m minimum focus distance and 0.15x maximum magnification. Viltrox also lists an STM lead-screw motor, internal focus, a sealed body, metal mount, USB-C firmware updates and minimal focus breathing. OpticalLimits adds useful field context: the lens is impressively sharp, keeps RAW distortion low and delivers outstanding value, with heavy vignetting as the most obvious weakness.

In practical terms, the Viltrox AF 9mm f/2.8 Air is for photographers and creators who want an extreme wide view without carrying a bulky lens. It suits city scenes, architecture, cramped rooms, dramatic landscapes, group selfies, travel video and perspective-heavy compositions. It is not meant for classic portraiture, sports, wildlife or deep background blur, and it does not replace a larger professional ultra-wide zoom. Its strength is simpler and very useful: it adds a genuinely wide, lightweight and affordable perspective to an APS-C kit.
