How Just One Word Can Tell You Everything

There are certain things I’ve taught on my photography workshops for years that, for one reason or another, I’ve never really talked about on YouTube and this is one of them. It’s an incredibly simple idea, but one that I’ve found can be surprisingly effective at helping photographers make better decisions about what they choose to photograph. So, on this woodland photography trip, I’m going to put my own advice…

The Art of Rejection

The Art of Rejection is something I think every photographer should learn. Finding something that catches your eye is the easy part, but recognising when it doesn't quite work as a photograph can be much harder. During this outing I find plenty to photograph, but rather than trying to make every opportunity work, I show you why I'm prepared to reject subjects, abandon compositions and simply move on.

Has Your Photography Stopped Improving? | Consider the 4C's of Photography

I'm sure you have never come across the acronym CCCC before? That's because I just made it up. However, it needs to be adopted if you want keep your photography improving.

Probably The Best Thing to do to Improve Your Photography

Ordinarily I would write a few lines here explaining why, what I am referring to is probably the best thing to do to improve your photography, but I think you need to see it for yourself by watching the video. All that I will say is that the images are all beautiful. No compromise on quality this week.

A Search for Something Special

A Search for Something Special follows a simple question that every photographer recognises: will today be the day something memorable appears? I do find an image that captures my imagination, and I take you into the editing suite to share the whole process from capture to finished print. This film is about patience, curiosity and that quiet hope that somewhere, hidden in the ordinary, there might be a photograph…

Don't be put off by the Green Season

Summer is often seen as one of the most difficult times of year for nature photography. The woodland floor is crowded with vegetation, the colours can feel repetitive and many photographers simply wait for autumn to arrive. In this video, I take a different view.

A Brief Window of Opportunity

With temperatures forecast to reach 28 degrees later in the day, I headed out shortly after sunrise to make the most of a brief window of opportunity before the heat arrived. Overnight rain had left the vegetation soaked, the wind was beginning to build and dark clouds slowly gathered on the horizon throughout the morning. The changing weather added a gentle sense of urgency to the morning, but also created moments…

I can prove that great images are under your nose

All of the photographs featured in this video were made beside roads, footpaths and easily accessible places that most people would probably overlook without a second thought. No dramatic locations, no remote hikes and no grand views. Just small subjects and quiet scenes found in ordinary surroundings.

Instructional Ancient Woodland and Macro Photography Walk

I’m currently travelling through the Ancient Caledonian Pine Forest of Scotland and in this first of two videos I head out on an instructional ancient woodland and macro photography walk in search of intimate woodland scenes and smaller natural details. This film focuses on woodland photography within the ancient Caledonian forest, exploring both wider woodland compositions and close-up macro photography subjects…

The Time Trap

The Time Trap is something every photographer falls into at some point. When you’ve only got a limited window, the pressure to come away with images can completely change how you see and work. In this video, I head out twice with very little time and quickly feel that pressure take over.

When the best images are found in the worst light.

Most photographers would avoid heading into woodland under clear skies, especially later in the day when the light is harsh and broken. It’s often seen as the worst light for photography — too contrasty, too unpredictable, and difficult to control. But in this short video, I take a different approach.

Beyond Photographing Water

Water is one of the most familiar subjects in nature photography, yet it is often approached in predictable ways. In this film I explore what happens when we look beyond simply photographing water and instead begin to notice the patterns, distortions, and fleeting shapes that exist within it. Reflections bend and stretch, currents pull forms into unexpected arrangements, and familiar surfaces transform into…

The Only Way to Get Great Pictures

Most photographers wait for perfect light. Golden hour; Fog; Frost or Snow. But if you rely on atmosphere alone, your photography will always depend on luck.

Nature Really is This Beautiful

On a cold, damp day in early spring, I head into a familiar woodland in search of natural beauty. At this time of year, the woods can feel stark and restrained, yet the snowdrop thrives quietly in these conditions, offering one of the first gentle signs that winter is loosening its grip. In this film, I spend time along the river, walking, searching, and slowing down.

The Non-Negotiables That Make Macro and Intimate Landscape Photography So Much Better

Close-up/Macro and intimate landscape photography often looks simple, but in practice it’s where small mistakes quickly add up. Stability, light control, precision, and how you trigger the shutter all matter far more than most people expect. In this video, I walk through the non-negotiables I rely on every time I’m photographing small scenes in nature.

Why I Still Return to the Same Places for Nature Photography

Most of the time we believe better photographs are somewhere else. This film was made to test that assumption. It was one of my first trips out after Christmas, returning once again to a woodland I have photographed for years.

Seeing Macro Subjects that Others Walk Past

Most people walk straight past these scenes without ever noticing them. This film is about learning to see what is already there. Small details underfoot, quiet moments, and subjects that only reveal themselves when you slow down and stop looking for something “better”.

A Photographic Feast of Winter Inspiration | Images That Defined My Year

As the year comes to a close, this film is a quiet look back at the images that defined my photography in 2025. Rather than chasing locations or dramatic moments, each photograph here is about observation, restraint and recognising when a scene already contains enough. Leaves, water, sand, frost and flowers.

5 Top Tips to Create Images that Win Awards

This week’s video goes inside the world of award-winning photography; what actually gets noticed, what quietly gets overlooked and what I’ve learned from having my own work judged over the years as a nature photographer. My recent Nature Photographer of the Year 2025 award for Fallen Beauty was the trigger for this film and it felt like the right moment to talk honestly about what these competitions really involve,…
