Pros & Cons
Pros
- Extreme lightness: At only 190 grams, it is ideal for travel kits or prolonged use without fatigue.
- STM Autofocus: Fast, quiet, stepper motor compatible with eye/face tracking on modern cameras.
- Excellent central sharpness: It offers very high resolution in the center from its maximum aperture of f/1.7.
- Unbeatable price: Positioned as one of the cheapest AF portrait options on the market (~$169 USD).
- Low Focus Breathing: Very useful for videographers doing manual or auto focus transitions.
Cons
- No physical controls: It lacks a manual aperture ring and AF/MF switch (everything is controlled from the camera body).
- Lack of climate sealing: It does not have protection against dust or splashes, limiting its use in adverse conditions.
- Vignetting and softness in corners: At f/1.7 there is a drop in light and sharpness at the edges, although it improves noticeably when closing to f/4 or f/8.
- Simple construction: Although it is robust for its price, it uses plastic materials in much of the body to keep the weight down.
