Summary

The NiSi 16mm f/2.8 ASPH is an ultra-wide medium-format prime built specifically for the Fujifilm G system. Its concept is immediately clear: combine an unusually broad angle of view for the GFX platform with an f/2.8 maximum aperture, resolving power intended for 100-megapixel sensors and a construction that remains realistic for field use. NiSi positions it as a high-performance optic for photographers who need dramatic width without stepping down to smaller formats, and the specification sheet supports that intent with a 12-group, 16-element design that includes three aspherical elements and four ultra-low dispersion elements. On paper, that makes it less of a casual wide-angle and more of a deliberate specialist tool for demanding image quality across a very large image circle.

In practical photography, a lens like this is most compelling for landscape, architecture, interiors and astrophotography. The approximately 12.6mm full-frame equivalent and field of view beyond 118 degrees create a very expansive rendering that can stretch depth, magnify foreground presence and immerse the viewer in the space of the scene. The f/2.8 aperture adds flexibility for dawn, dusk, night scenes and dim interiors, especially on high-resolution medium-format bodies where preserving detail and tonal nuance matters. NiSi also pairs that optical ambition with useful handling features: a minimum focus distance of 0.25m for strong close foreground compositions, an 82mm front filter thread for screw-in filters, and an 8-blade diaphragm designed to produce crisp eight-point sunstars from f/4 to f/22 when point light sources become part of the composition.

What makes the NiSi 16mm f/2.8 ASPH particularly interesting is that it does not stop at raw coverage. The weather-sealed metal body, compact 108mm barrel, approximate weight of 835g and SA+ anti-reflection plus hardened surface coatings show an emphasis on serious location work rather than brochure-only specifications. This is not an all-purpose lens, and it is not trying to be one. It is a focused creative instrument for photographers who want medium-format files with a genuinely extreme perspective, whether that means emphasizing scale in landscape, geometry in architecture or atmosphere in interiors and night scenes. For that audience, the combination of width, resolution and ruggedness gives the lens a strong identity.
