Summary

The Sony FE 100-400mm f/5.6-8 OSS is an official full-frame E-mount telephoto zoom built around reach, stabilization and portability. It spans a flexible 100-400mm range, uses a variable f/5.6-8 maximum aperture, includes Optical SteadyShot and relies on a linear motor autofocus drive. At 654g, with a 78mm diameter, 165mm length and 67mm filter thread, it is positioned as a long-reach lens that stays manageable for handheld outdoor photography.

Its photographic value comes from giving Sony full-frame users a compact way to isolate distant subjects without stepping into the size and cost of faster professional super-telephoto zooms. The 15-element, 10-group optical design includes 2 ED and 2 aspherical elements, while a 9-blade circular diaphragm supports smoother rendering when backgrounds are distant. The 0.86m telephoto close-focus distance and 0.41x maximum magnification add useful flexibility for flowers, details, small wildlife and compressed close-range compositions.

The lens makes most sense for wildlife, birds, outdoor sports, travel, daylight landscapes and family events where reach matters more than a bright aperture. The f/8 long-end aperture means it is best matched with good light, modern high-ISO bodies or static subjects where OSS can help. Focus hold, a focus limiter, zoom lock and dust/moisture resistance round out a practical feature set for hobbyists and advanced users who want 400mm reach in a lighter Sony FE package.
