Cheap 420-800mm telephoto lenses do exist, and the reach they promise is not a marketing fantasy. They do not replace a modern super-telephoto. Their low price shifts the cost somewhere else: less light, fewer automatisms, less room for error, and much more work for the person behind the camera.
That is the real catch with these lenses. It is not that the millimeters are invented. It is that many people look at them as if they were a trimmed-down version of a professional 600 or 800mm, when in reality they play in a different category. They offer a cheap way into extreme focal lengths, but they demand that you accept a much harsher shooting experience.
The price does not disappear, it moves
When one of these 420-800mm lenses comes out of the box, the savings are obvious. There is no autofocus. There is no optical stabilization. There is no electronic communication with the camera. There is not even a conventional diaphragm that lets you work freely. As the focal length increases, the lens becomes even slower, and that quickly complicates any moving scene.
That point matters more than the number written on the barrel. A cheap 800mm can bring things much closer, but if it forces you to work near f/16, the margin for freezing a bird, a sport, or any restless subject drops very quickly. In that scenario you are not only fighting manual focus. You are also fighting shutter speed, ISO, vibration, and a very narrow angle of view.
That is why the low price should not be read as a victory over the industry, but as a redistribution of problems. The maker saves on complex optics, motors, stabilization, and electronics. The user pays for those savings in operating difficulty and in a much lower hit rate.

What matters is not the trick, but the limit
These lenses become more interesting when we stop asking whether they can humiliate a serious telephoto. The answer is no. The useful question is different: how much can be achieved with a very simple construction and almost no technical assistance.
That is where something valuable appears. For many enthusiasts, this kind of lens can work as a cheap way to try a focal length they have never used before. It can be useful for the Moon, for relatively still subjects, for distant details, or for finding out whether they actually like photography with extreme focal lengths. It can also help them understand through direct experience why a better telephoto costs much more.
Mirrorless cameras improved that scenario quite a bit. The electronic viewfinder, screen magnification, and aids like focus peaking make manual focus more tolerable. That does not turn this 420-800mm into a magical bargain. It only makes a very austere optical idea a little more usable.
Seen that way, the mistake is not buying one of these lenses. The mistake is asking it to do the job of a tool built for another league. If someone needs to photograph moving wildlife, sports, or scenes where the moment cannot be repeated, they probably need fewer millimeters and more real quality. But if what they want is to experiment, learn, and measure how far their patience goes with a manual super-telephoto, then these 420-800mm lenses can make sense.
The appeal of these telephotos is not to prove that the market exaggerates the price of professional models. It is to offer a cheap doorway into a difficult focal length. Sometimes that doorway leads to a better purchase in the future. Sometimes it only serves to discover that this way of photographing was not for you. And for many photographers, that answer is worth money too.
