Nikon NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II Firmware v1.10

Official autofocus fix for the Z TELECONVERTER TC-2.0x workflow.

Description

Nikon NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II Firmware v1.10 is the first public firmware release for Nikon's second-generation professional 70-200mm f/2.8 Z telezoom. The lens itself combines a constant f/2.8 aperture, internal zoom construction, a stripped-down traveling weight of about 998 g, built-in vibration reduction rated at 5.5 stops, and up to 6.0 stops with compatible Synchro VR bodies. Nikon also equips it with a multi-focusing design driven by Silky Swift Voice Coil Motors, aimed at fast, quiet and precise autofocus for sports, events, wildlife, documentary video and other work where subject distance changes quickly and handling balance matters as much as outright sharpness.

Firmware 1.10 is focused and narrow by design: Nikon states that it fixes an issue in which autofocus could respond slowly when the lens was used with the Z TELECONVERTER TC-2.0x. That matters because a 70-200mm f/2.8 is often paired with teleconverters when a shooter wants extra reach without changing the base lens, and any hesitation in AF response becomes immediately visible during live tracking, burst work or moving-video coverage. Nikon lists the update as compatible with Z-series cameras and Z CINEMA series Nikon cameras, and the official instructions require the lens to be mounted directly on the camera for the installation process, with the teleconverter removed while the firmware is written.

In practical use, this firmware is most relevant for photographers and filmmakers who depend on predictable focus behavior in fast sessions: field sports, weddings from the back of the aisle, stage work, wildlife hides, press events and handheld documentary shooting. The update does not promise a redesign of rendering, VR or optical behavior; instead, it improves operational confidence in a specific configuration that many professionals will actually use. The installation flow is straightforward: download the BIN file, copy it to the root directory of a memory card formatted in-camera, mount the lens directly on a compatible body, open Setup Menu > Firmware version, and let the camera complete the process before rebooting and confirming the new version.
