Summary

The Sony FE 400mm f/4.5 GM OSS is an exceptionally lightweight professional super-telephoto prime designed for full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras. Weighing just 994g (bare body) and measuring 242mm in length, it reimagines handheld wildlife, bird and sports photography by combining high-end G Master optics with unprecedented mobility, avoiding the severe bulk and five-figure price tag of traditional f/2.8 super-telephotos.

Its advanced optical design features 22 elements in 16 groups, including 3 Super ED elements and 1 ED element to virtually eliminate chromatic aberration and color fringing. Autofocus is driven by dual XD Linear Motors that deliver near-instantaneous, silent tracking capable of keeping pace with high-speed bursts up to 120 fps. Built with an internal focusing mechanism, a 95mm front filter thread, 2.5 m minimum focus distance (0.18x magnification), optical SteadyShot with three stabilization modes and an 11-blade circular diaphragm stopping down to f/32, it balances optical rigor with extensive field versatility.

In real-world assignments, the Sony FE 400mm f/4.5 GM OSS delivers outstanding edge-to-edge sharpness, creamy background blur and robust handling. It is fully compatible with Sony's 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters, transforming into a 560mm f/6.3 or 800mm f/9 setup while retaining fast autofocus. With comprehensive weather sealing, four customizable AFL buttons, a versatile function ring and an included ALC-SH189 hood and tripod collar, it provides working creators with a definitive portable super-telephoto solution.
