Polaroid Mod adds creative modes on a lens dial without phone app
Polaroid launched the Mod instant camera at an official price of $169.99. The camera puts four creative modes onto a physical dial around the lens and does away with phone apps entirely. That choice cuts smartphone dependence while shooting, but it shifts the cost of experimentation straight onto chemical film packs where every frame runs roughly $2.37.
The mechanical dial on the front of the body adds double exposure, light painting, motion freeze and split shot settings. For split shooting, the retail box includes a physical plastic mask. The accessory covers half the lens barrel so photographers can expose two separate scenes onto one square print.
Mechanical control and viewfinder tradeoffs
Unlike the Now+ or the Flip, the Polaroid Mod runs entirely on its own. It lacks Bluetooth connectivity and features no digital menus on screen. Its dual-zone autofocus mechanism relies on two internal lenses. The system switches automatically between a close-up range from 0.4 to 1.3 meters and a distance zone reaching from one meter to infinity.
However, pure mechanical operation introduces clear practical compromises in daily use. The standalone optical viewfinder creates noticeable parallax error at close working distances. That offset makes precise alignment on split-shot frames tricky. Furthermore, the built-in flash automatically re-arms after every exposure. That reset turns the strobe back on even during the second frame of a double exposure. With a fixed nominal aperture of f/11, the exposure meter fires the flash unless working in direct bright sunlight.
Film costs compared to instant alternatives
The camera body weighs 520 grams without film and accepts both battery-free i-Type packs and vintage 600 cartridges. Each pack yields eight prints and sells for $18.99 on the official store. That price tag demands deliberate calculations before turning the dial.
| Model | Year | Focus | Creative control | Price |
| Polaroid Now Gen 3 | 2025 | Dual-zone autofocus | Pure automatic | $119.99 |
| Polaroid Now+ Gen 3 | 2025 | Dual-zone autofocus | Modes via mobile app | $139.99 |
| Polaroid Mod | 2026 | Dual-zone autofocus | Four dial modes | $169.99 |
| Polaroid I-2 | 2023 | Continuous LiDAR autofocus | Full onboard manual | $599.99 |

Compared to instant film rivals like the Instax family from Fujifilm, Polaroid square film delivers a substantially larger image area, yet at a notably higher price per frame. The Polaroid Mod rewards physical handling and spontaneous visual play, but photographers must budget for failed experimental shots during the learning curve.
