Summary

The Leica APO-Macro-Elmarit-SL 100mm f/2.8 is a short-telephoto macro lens for the Leica L mount and full-frame SL system cameras. Its 100mm focal length gives it a comfortable working distance for close-up subjects while also placing it in a classic portrait range. Leica specifies a 30 cm close-focus distance and a 1:1 reproduction ratio, so the lens can render small subjects at life size while still offering the compression and subject separation expected from a premium 100mm optic.

The official Leica description gives an optical construction of 17 elements in 12 groups with apochromatic correction, a design intended to suppress chromatic aberration and preserve contrast across the focus range. The f/2.8 maximum aperture and 9-blade diaphragm give enough speed for portrait separation and controlled macro lighting without turning the lens into an oversized ultra-fast prime. Autofocus is supported, and the focus limiter can restrict the range to 30-50 cm or 50 cm to infinity, making it easier to move between detailed macro work and more spontaneous portrait subjects.

As a physical tool, this is a professional SL lens rather than a tiny travel macro. Leica describes a robust full-metal body with dust and splash protection, AquaDura coating on the outer elements, a weight of about 801 g, a length just under 137mm and a 67mm filter thread. It is best suited to macro, product, beauty, detail reproduction, refined portraiture and editorial work where color fidelity, microcontrast and optical correction matter more than absolute compactness.
