Canon EOS 5D

The Canon EOS 5D is a full-frame DSLR from Canon that became a turning point for accessible 35mm digital SLR photography. Its 35.8 x 23.9mm CMOS sensor with 12.8 effective megapixels delivered the full angle of view of Canon EF lenses, excluding EF-S, in a body smaller than professional double-grip DSLRs. Canon equipped it with the DIGIC II imaging engine, JPEG and RAW capture, CompactFlash storage, a pentaprism finder with approximately 96% coverage and a shutter up to 1/8000 s.

Its photographic value lies in bringing the full-frame look to advanced and professional photographers who did not want a 1-series body. The combination of large pixels, ISO 100-1600 expandable to 50 and 3200, natural color and straightforward handling gave the EOS 5D a lasting reputation for portrait, wedding, documentary and available-light work. It has no video recording, modern screen interface or in-body stabilization, but that simplicity keeps the experience centered on exposure, lens choice, framing and RAW files.

In current use, the EOS 5D is especially appealing for portraiture, calm landscape work, editorial photography, personal projects and bright EF primes or zooms. Its 3 fps burst and 9-point AF system are not built for fast action, yet the full-frame sensor still has a recognizable visual signature and smooth tonal transition. It is a camera for photographers who value a simple, robust and direct DSLR, closer in rhythm to a film SLR than to a contemporary hybrid camera.
