The Leica D-Lux 8 is the fixed-lens compact with which Leica returns to the Micro Four Thirds format: a 17-megapixel CMOS sensor and a DC Vario-Summilux 10.9-34mm f/1.7-2.8 ASPH zoom, equivalent to 24-75mm in 35mm terms. The magnesium body with a leather covering weighs 397 g with the battery and measures 130 × 69 × 62 mm, so it fits in any bag and does not weigh on the neck.
The OLED electronic viewfinder offers 2.36 million dots at 0.74x, and the 3-inch touchscreen with 1,843,200 dots fills the back. ISO runs from 100 to 25000, bursts reach 11 fps at 10-bit with room for 14 or more DNG files, the mechanical shutter covers 60 s to 1/4000 s and the electronic one 1 s to 1/16000 s. Contrast autofocus works with 49 fields, stabilisation is optical and lives in the lens, and video reaches 4K at 30p and Full HD at 60p. It records to SD UHS-II cards, the battery is a 1025 mAh BP-DC15 and the Leica CF D flash comes in the box.
It is a camera for street, travel and everyday use, with a fast zoom that runs from wide-angle to short portrait, a macro mode that focuses from 3 cm at the wide end, and flash sync up to 1/4000 s. The ISO shoe takes Leica flash units, and the battery charges over USB-C with the camera switched off. Leica presented it on 2 July 2024.
