Summary

The Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 70–200mm f/2.8 ASPH., the fast telephoto zoom of the SL range: 70–200mm at a constant f/2.8, built from 20 elements in 15 groups with three aspherical surfaces and seven elements using low-dispersion and high anomalous partial dispersion glass. The Leica design for the L mount targets sport, nature and event work, where speed and reach matter as much as optical quality.

Focusing is internal, so the barrel keeps its length as the focal length changes, and the zoom is internal as well. Built-in optical stabilisation helps handheld shooting at the long end, while the diaphragm is set from the camera with no aperture ring. Dust- and splash-resistant sealing, Aqua-Dura coating and a detachable tripod shoe round out a lens built for outdoor work.

Minimum focus is 0.65 m at 70mm and 1.00 m at 200mm, with a maximum magnification of 1:5.1 and a 124 × 185mm field at the tele end. The L 1.4× and 2.0× extenders stretch the reach to 280mm or 400mm with the expected loss of light. At 1,540 g with an 82mm filter thread, the design favours performance and robustness over portability, and suits compressed portraits, wildlife and low-light event coverage: that is the brief of the Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 70–200mm f/2.8 ASPH..
